2009 Compassion Performing Arts Series

Dear Church Family,

This last year was our first run at the Compassion Performing Arts Series. I
am so pleased with the results. The concerts were well attended, the artists
were fantastic and the food for the dinner portion was excellent. We raised
a significant amount of money for our first year and we were able to
positively impact two well deserving ministries in our community. The
events brought out a host of our own church family in meaningful servant
hood roles and the Name of Christ was honored at each event.

The last concert, Newsong, resulted in a number of people making personal
commitments to Jesus Christ! It was a great first year.

There was no way we could have done this without your help. Thanks to those
who bought season tickets. Your faithful contributions made these events
possible. Thanks to those who bought tables. It was your generous gifts that
allowed us to underwrite the costs of the concerts. I am grateful for the
many volunteers who worked tirelessly out of the goodness of their hearts.
The office staff and the CPAS team also deserve hearty thanks. You
organized, planned, prayed and worked with great dedication. Thank you!

We are thankful to the Lord for guiding us on this trek. Originally, I had a
conversation with two men, Roy Morgan and Don Bulla, who wanted to find a
way to bring good Christian music to High Point. We knew the church would be
a great venue, but we wanted to do more than simply host some concert
events. We all felt that the concerts needed to have a lasting purpose. So
we prayed and asked the Lord if there was a way we could enjoy wonderful
music and also use that kind of event for His purposes. That's when the idea
of a Compassion Performing Arts Series was born. We believe this is more
than a concert series, it is a mission. It is a way for our congregation to
engage in local missions. Through your involvement we are directly touching
the lives of people in need here in our own community.

I hope that you will continue to be involved this next year. I also pray
that others, who have not yet been a part of the series, will do so this
year. Whether you enjoy certain artists or not, is really not the issue. The
artists we have come are top of the line, but the real purpose is ministry.
When we participate, we are serving our neighbors. It is a worthy cause that
I hope you will be a part of this next year.

We have four great concerts lined up for this coming year where the proceeds
will again benefit the community. Mandisa will be with us in March, Mark
Lowery in June, Brock Gill in September, and Newsong Christmas Tour again in
November or December.

Thanks again for your participation, and I hope to see you again this next
year at CPAS.

Grace & Peace,
Pastor Rick

T h e F i r s t P o i n t November 23, 2009

Dear Church Family,
Last Tuesday, the 17th, I met with the creative team again to finish the details for our Advent services. We
hope these Narrative Worship services will draw you closer to the Lord, as well as give you a meaningful way
to express your praise to the Lord.
The focus for each week is as follows;
November 29—We Prepare for the Future Best By Loving Others in the Present
December 6—Waiting in Hope of His Return
December 13—The Joy of Jesus
December 20—Through Him, we have peace with God
Advent is a time to prepare for the coming of Christ by examining our hearts, so there should be an element
of spiritual renewal during the season. I hope that will be the case for you. I’m praying it will be the case for
me.
Saturday the choir had a three hour rehearsal for our Christmas Worship Concert on December the 13th. The
concert is at 6pm. They are ready and eager to share their message in song with you. I believe you will be
inspired and blessed. The choir will also be singing each Sunday during our Advent services and again on our
Christmas Eve service.
I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. Let me offer this simple reminder from yesterday’s sermon. Because
we are “in Christ” we have every reason to be thankful. As an aid to remember the things we have “in Christ”
for which to be thankful, I have written an acrostic, using the word THANKFUL.
T—in Christ we have THE TRUTH
H—in Christ we have HOPE OF HEAVEN
A—in Christ we have ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
N—in Christ we have NEW LIFE
K—in Christ we have KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
F—in Christ we have FORGIVENESS OF SIN
U—in Christ we have UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
L—in Christ we have LIBERTY
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Rick

Thank YOU FWC Family!

Hello Church FAMILY!

I wanted to send out a BIG THANK YOU to everyone for all your hard work
this year for the Costume Carnival. It was a HUGE success! We had
approximately 700 children and based on the registration cards over 200
families!
THANK YOU for all the candy, and the baked goodies, they lasted us all
night and we even had leftovers! You guys ROCK!
THANK YOU to all the many volunteers who came in last week before the
carnival and helped with setting up the games, sorting out the candy, making
posters, decorating, blowing up balloons, setting up inflatables and sorting
out baked goodies. Many hours went into this and I appreciate EVERY single
one of YOU!
THANK YOU to all of you who helped work the carnival. Many of you
arrived at 3pm and stayed until 7pm without a single BREAK! You are awesome
and your dedication did not go unnoticed! I saw big smiles at the games and
that is what the carnival is really all about! Sharing the Love we have
with others who may never see the Love of Christ in their lives.
THANK YOU to everyone who stayed LATE after the carnival, cleaning up,
sweeping, putting games and tables and chairs back where they belong so
church could go on as usual on Sunday.
THANK YOU to everyone who donated money or prizes for us to give away at
the show. Our goal was to share the gospel with the visiting families at

URGENT REQUEST from Dr. Karl Eastlack, CEO World Hope International

URGENT REQUEST
from Dr. Karl Eastlack, CEO
World Hope International

Immediate Help Needed in the Philippines

A rash of severe weather has caused massive flooding and triggered deadly landslides in the Philippines. More than 450 have died and Reuters reports that the storms have caused at least $258 million worth of damage to crops and infrastructure on the island of Luzon.

Damage to churches, homes, businesses and schools has been extensive; and thousands of people have been displaced.

A local pastor near Manila recently wrote to us, "While the mess in Metro Manila brought by Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) is not yet settled, another Typhoon "Pepeng" has caused extensive damage in the Central and Northern part of the Philippines.

Our Wesleyan partner churches in Metro Manila have already identified 347 families directly affected by the storms.

Reports from the Northern part of the Philippines confirm extensive damage there as well. Many areas cannot yet be reached because the roads are impassable."

World Hope International is preparing to respond.

The needs are great, including clean-up of schools, churches and homes, repairs to damaged structures; and the restoration of functional classrooms, worship centers, and businesses will just be a start.

In the midst of profound trauma, we are eager to facilitate the process of healing and restoration in those directly affected by the storms.

While disaster has struck throughout Asia recently (India, Indonesia, Samoa etc.), our existing, strategic partnerships in the Philippines make it the most appropriate location for WHI to respond at this time.

Together with the Wesleyan Church of North America and the Wesleyan Church of the Philippines, WHI will provide updates as more specific information is available.

To help now, you can make contributions online at www.worldhope.org by clicking the "Donate Now" button. When the page of giving options appears, select "Disaster Relief" and proceed to check out. Simply enter "Philippines" in the comment line. Alternatively, you can mail your check to: World Hope International, P.O. Box 96338, Washington, DC 20090-6338. Please note "Philippines" in the memo field on your check.

Thank you for responding generously. Please keep the people of the Philippines in your prayers during this time of crisis and loss.

BGS Urges North America Wesleyans Help with Typhoon Victims

BGS Urges North America Wesleyans Help with Typhoon Victims

The Board of General Superintendents said that recent news reports put the mounting death toll in the Philippines at more than 250 persons due to Typhoon Ondoy (also referred to by its international code name Ketsana). Eighty percent of fifteen million residents in and around Manila have been affected by flooding, after a month's worth of rain fell there in one 24-hour period.

Assessment is underway of storm and flood damage suffered by Wesleyan families and churches in the aftermath of the typhoon. Initial reports from Reverend Alberto Patacsil, General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church of the Philippines, indicate that at least three Wesleyan congregations on the island of Luzon suffered major damage.

In cooperation with Filipino General Conference leaders, the North American Board of General Superintendents has declared a disaster level emergency for victims of Typhoon Ondoy-Ketsana. Specific North American Wesleyan response efforts will be coordinated with World Hope International as better damage assessments become available. In the meantime, individuals and churches can provide immediate assistance with donations to World Hope International online at www.worldhope.org (click on "Donate Now" on the left-hand navigation bar). District or local church disaster response teams may contact the Hope Corps office at World Hope International.

Five feet of flood waters raged through the Cainta Wesleyan Church, depositing a layer of thick, malodorous mud. Many church members parked their cars at the church, thinking it was a higher place of refuge, before going out to assist fellow members who were evacuating their homes in lower lying areas. Upon returning, however, they discovered that flash floods had covered their automobiles and were flowing through the church building and academy, destroying practically everything. According to Rev. Patacsil, most members of the Cainta church experienced property losses, but thankfully no lives were lost.

Rev. Joel Pascua of the Green Park Wesleyan Church related that he was conducting revival services several hours away in Baguio City, when he learned that flood waters were threatening his community. Returning home, he had to swim through water six feet deep to enter his house. He found his wife and small children safe on the second floor, where they had managed to save a few church and family belongings. However, many other church members' homes, belongings, and businesses were less fortunate.

The pastor of the San Juan Wesleyan Church, located in one of the worst-affected areas of Metro Manila, said many church members' homes were under water there. Fortunately, most residents had been able to climb on their roof tops for safety. However, all of their personal belongings were lost. Additional stories of the storm's impact are expected Wednesday, as pastors who are able to travel attend a previously scheduled ministerial convention at Rosales Bible College, several hours north of Manila.

The First Point - September 14, 2009

Last Thursday was our third concert in our four part Compassion Performing Arts Series. Gold Citywas inspiring (wow could that bass sing low!) and the Hoppers brought the house down. It was notonly a night of entertainment and inspiration, but I felt like we were in a worship service. I know I wasblessed and look forward to having another southern gospel night. The house was packed. I don’t thinkthere was another seat in the house. Our next concert will have a completely different flavor, but willbe just as inspirational. NewSong will be with us doing their Christmas Shoes tour; in addition, BigDaddy Weave and Francesca Battistelli will be here. The concert is on November 30. It will be a greatway to kick off the Christmas season. However, you’ll need to purchase tickets right away becausethey are already almost sold out!Sunday afternoon we had our annual all-church picnic. I think the change to City Lake Park inJamestown was a marked improvement. The facilities were first rate. It was a relaxing afternoon, talking with friends and eating good food. Once again, Tommy Smith won the watermelon seedspitting contest (can you believe we have one of those!). Someone asked me why I didn’t enter thecontest. I told them I didn’t have any hot air left after preaching that morning. Anyway, Tommy spit hisseed 37 feet!!! Impressive. The pastoral staff was put on the spot as contestants in the “Not-So-New-Newlywed Game”. I thought it was particularly funny, since I didn’t have to play (my wife was inCalifornia).Speaking of which, Marcia will be home Tuesday night! Yeah!!! I better get the house clean before shegets home.Right now we are in one of those seasons in the church where there are a lot of things cooking on theburners, but nothing that I can report just yet. I have a think tank that is working on some brandingitems; the LBA is reviewing some objectives to help strengthen our congregational health; the staff isworking on some worship items for the advent season—all things that are very exciting and importantin the life of the church. However, nothing is at a point yet where I can fill you in. Let just say, thereare some wonderful things developing as we are praying, thinking and discussing. Please be in prayerfor us that we correctly discern the Lord’s direction and that we only move according to His bidding. And throughout all their journeys whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sonsof Israel would set out; but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when itwas taken up. For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day,and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel—Exodus 40:36-38Maranatha! Keep your eyes to the sky. Our Redemption draws near!Grace & Peace,Pastor Rick

The First Point - September 8, 2009

It’s wonderful to see autumn approaching—the lower humidity and cooler temperatures. I
love this time of year. One of the things that’s so great about fall in the South is that is lasts
for a couple of months. We’ll be enjoying beautiful weather through the rest of September,
and all of October and maybe even into a little bit of November. Wow! That is fantastic!
Last Monday night we the monthly board meeting at Wesleyan Academy. The school is off to
a strong year and we are rejoicing that enrollment has stayed steady and we were still doing
school tours as late as last week. Many Private Schools are struggling in lieu of the present
economy. The Lord has certainly shown us favor. The board does not take that for granted,
and humbly thanks the Lord for his kindness. We also are praying for our sister schools, for
we desire the tide to rise so that all the ships in the harbor will rise.
Thursday I took Marcia to the airport. She flew out west. Our niece is getting married in
Laguna Beach, California. She returns next week. It’s not as lonely, however, as when Marcia
visited Maine last spring, because I have Wally (our dog) and Ivy (our granddaughter) to
keep me company. ☺
David (our son) and I left early Friday morning for Indiana. I drove him back to college for
his final semester. Yeah!! I headed back early Saturday morning and was home by 1:30 in the
afternoon. Whew—that was a fast trip.
This is a big week for us, as we are hosting the third installment of the Compassion
Performing Arts Series with the Hoppers and Gold City. We’re burning through the tickets. If
you plan to attend and haven’t purchased tickets, you better hurry, because they’re running
low.
September 25-26 is our marriage seminar with Dr. Dan Croy. I hope you’re planning on
coming. We haven’t hosted a marriage seminar at the church for several years, so it’s time.
This seminar won’t be like your typical marriage retreat—dropping you into awkward
situations, having to answer penetrating questions. I believe we will all be inspired,
encouraged and strengthened in our marriages, and in a way that is fun and entertaining. I
hope you’ll come.
I shared a poem at the end of the service last Sunday that someone in the congregation asked
me to include in this week’s First Point. So here it is;
When I stand at the Judgment seat of Christ
And He shows His plan for me
The plan of my life as it might have been
Had he had his way—and I see
How I blocked him here, and checked Him there,
And I would not yield my will,
Will there be grief in my Savior’s eyes,
Grief though He loves me still?
Would He have me rich and I stand there poor,
Stripped of all but His grace
While memory runs like a hunted thing,
Down the paths I cannot retrace.
Lord, of the years that are left to me
I give them to Your hand
Take me and break me and mold me,
To the pattern that You have planned
Maranatha! Keep your eyes to the sky. Our Redemption draws near!
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Rick
