The First Point - August 18, 2009
As I mentioned in last week’s First Point, I spoke last Monday at Wesleyan Academy.Tuesday was staff meeting day. We spent the morning reviewing the direction of the church and wherewe believe God is leading us. I always enjoy staff time together. On Wednesday, Pastor Chris and Pastor Doug and I met to make final decisions on the Christmas Presen-tation. We have selected the music and are looking forward to the Worship Arts Mini Camp this Wednes-day night. I’m looking forward to this new season with the choir. We’ve got some great new songs in thelineup. We had another School Board meeting on Thursday night. God is opening opportunities for us. As one ofthe board members said recently, “God is marching us toward His will.” I like that. No matter what hap-pens, if we know that God is in control, we must assume that whatever circumstances come our way,God is directing us through His providence. Our job is to keep our eyes and ears open to his directionthrough spiritual discernment, counsel and the Holy Scriptures. School begins this week. I am so excitedfor what God has in store for Wesleyan Academy this coming year.Sunday afternoon we had a “think tank” meeting. We need to put a new sign out front on Westchester, and we need to update our webpage, among other things. Therefore, I brought together a group of crea-tive people to help me brainstorm some ideas. We had a good start. Some of you have been praying for me because of some health issues. I appreciate that. A few monthsago, I had two teeth that were abscessed. Bacteria had entered through a crack in the tooth. The Dentistended up doing two root canals. The problem was the infection was not going away. As a result, I wasgiven three courses of antibiotics. After being on strong antibiotics for 36 days, the infection cleared up.However, the medication also wiped out the good bacteria in my stomach. Reluctantly, I have been sickfrom that. I have eaten very little in the last week and let’s just say that what I have eaten hasn’t stayedwith me very long—‘nough said. Anyway, I’ve been weak and uncomfortable because of it. Sunday wasa chore preaching, as I had eaten almost no food and was physically depleted. However, the Lord gaveme strength to get through. Those who were aware have been praying for me and I believe the Lord hashonored your prayers. I had some fluids put in intravenously yesterday and had some blood work done todetermine where I am at. Good news—I’m going to live to tell the tale! ☺ It will be a few more weeksbefore I am back to 100%, but I am on the mend. Hopefully, I’ll be back to eating normally before verylong. The silver lining is that I have lost about 10 pounds, though this is an unpleasant way to losepounds! Thank you for your prayers, and I appreciate it if you’ll continue to pray for me. God bless you.
Keep your eyes to the sky. Our redemption draws near. Maranatha!
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Rick

The First Point 8-10-2009
It was great to get back home from New York and spend last week once again in the sunny,WARM south. Our house seems to have a revolving door, with guests coming and going from all over the coun-try. I love it. The best man in our wedding, Steve Pearson, his sister Joni Campbell and their parents, Philand Martha Pearson were down for a few days because of a family wedding. Some of you may knowHarold and Mary Bean. Their granddaughter was married last Friday. Mary and Martha are twin sisters. So the Pearsons were down for the event. I grew up with the Pearsons in Michigan—our two familieswere in business together and we spent most of our time together. So it was really great to connect withWe also had friends from Maine who came to visit for the weekend, Shannon and Dawn Eckstein. They stayed with the Taubins and were graciously hosted by them. Also this same weekend, we had a young man, Justin Baker, who grew up in our church inPresque Isle, but is now living in New Mexico, fly in for the week. Justin is a close friend of our son,David. He is staying with us in our home this week.So we have people coming from every quarter. Sunday after service we went out with the Pearsonclan and then they came to the house for the afternoon. They left at 4:30, and then the Maine crowd ar-rived around 6:00pm and stayed until 10:30pm. It was a full day! It was a lot of fun. I look forward tomore friends visiting in the future. However, give us a few weeks to recuperate. ☺Last Monday night we had a special School board meeting. The Lord is doing some great thingsat the school. The enrollment is steady and prospects for the future look great. We are also very excitedabout our new Head of School, Dr. Rob Brown and his wife Jackie and their two children. Thank you formaking them feel so warmly welcomed. As with any school, there are challenges we must face this year, and so we need your continued prayers. This morning I had a chance to speak to the faculty and staff at Wesleyan Education Center. Thiswas their in-service day in preparation for the start of school. (Can you believe school begins nextweek—Wow!) I believe there are about 120 on staff, so there was a sizable group of men and women. We shared a great breakfast together. Then Dr. Brown spoke about the sovereignty and calling of God. Ivery much appreciated his message and the issues he expressed as being fundamental to the vision anddirection of the school. I then offered a brief word. Dr. Brown asked me to share the vision of the churchand how the school and church can lock arms to work together in the future. I appreciate Dr. Brown’scommitment to drawing the school and church together. My devotional was warmly received by the fac-ulty, staff and administration.I look forward to another warm and sunny day. Gotta love the south!

The First Point - August 3, 2009
Last week was very busy. A week ago yesterday, Marcia and I flew to Western New York. I was
the speaker for their family camp. I preached 11 messages in 5 days. So I’m just a bit tired.
During the days I spoke on sanctification and in the evening services I exposited Christ’s letters
to the seven churches. I addressed the modern trends of the evangelical church in North American and
contrasted that with the Lord’s expectations for the church today. The messages were well received, and
they laughed at my corny jokes, which is always a good sign ☺
It was a great opportunity to connect with some people who have deep roots in Christendom. I
talked with one pastor who had sat under A.W. Tozer’s ministry and another who had sat under David
Martin Lloyd-Jones’ ministry. Both of those men are favorite authors of mine. Martin Lloyd-Jones was
the pastor at Westminster Cathedral in London England in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. He is my favorite
commentator and expositor.
We also had dinner with Dr. Storer and Mrs. Emmit, retired Wesleyan missionaries to Africa. The
Emmits know some of our people here in High Point and wanted to be sure and pass on their regards.
The Emmits are originally from Maine, so Marcia knows them from childhood. They first traveled to Af-
rica in the 60’s on ship. They knew the Saunders, the first Wesleyan missionaries to travel to Africa in
1902. It was great to share with the different people. I felt like I was touching a little bit of history—and
if you know me at all, you know I am crazy about history!
Yesterday, Marcia, Candace, David, Ivy and I led the Heritage service at the assisted living
facility here in High Point. We had a great time. Actually, it was a bit comical. David, our son was there
to watch Ivy, our 4 month old granddaughter—so that Candace could help Marcia lead the singing
service. So David was our nursery worker.
When Candace began to sing, Ivy began to cry—and cry and cry! So David took her out into the
hall. Candace was so distracted by the baby crying that she had to stop singing her special for a moment.
She began to laugh, but soon recovered.
In the meanwhile, I dashed into the hall to see if I could help David. I couldn’t see him, but heard
the baby howling. So, I asked an attendant where they were, she pointed and smiled. I found David in the
broom closet (the only suitable nursery he could find) trying to change the baby’s diaper. He has never
changed a diaper before, so he had her laid on top of clothes dryer; the diaper was backwards and he was
sweating.
“I’ve never done this before. I don’t know what to do and I can’t find her pacifier, David
lamented! We eventually got things under control and afterward we all shared in a great laugh.
Today, August 3rd is Marcia’s birthday. Happy birthday, honey!!!
Maranatha! Keep your eyes to the sky. Our Redemption draws near!
