The First Point-July 20, 2009

It was one year ago yesterday that I began preaching at the church. Incredible how quickly time
passes! The changes that have happened in the last year are head-spinning; our dear friends from Maine (pastor Doug and Tina) moved down and joined the staff, we purchased a home; we got a dog; our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter moved down; we launched our discipleship initiative and have completed the training of our first tier of discipleship leaders, and are ready to launch our first groups in a couple of weeks; we began the Compassion Performing Arts Series, and have hosted two of the four concerts; we hired a music minister; and I finished the first season of directing the choir. Whew! It’s been a full year and I have enjoyed
every bit of it.

Praise the Lord! Our son-in-law, Andy got a job. Andy began work today at the Piedmont International Airport in Greensboro. They were so excited, and we are very happy for them. They secured an apartment over the weekend and will be moving sometime this next week. God is good! ☺

On Wednesday I had a chance to meet with Pastor Chris Vernon. He planted a Wesleyan church just outside of Wilmington. It was exciting to hear him share what the Lord is doing there. I don’t have all the stats, but he said he would send me an email update. Once I get that I’ll pass it on to you. However, in general, they have grown in just a couple of months to an average attendance of over 100 a week; several have been baptized; and many are getting saved. It is wonderful to hear what God is doing and to observe Pastor Chris’ humble heart. Crosswinds, the church’s name, was planted this last winter. Part of our mission budget goes to support that church plant. Stay in prayer for that young church as they seek to be obedient to God’s call.

Pastor Chris expressed to me an interest in learning about our discipleship journey and wants to meet with us to learn how they can implement such a ministry in their church. Can you imagine what God will do if they begin early on, taking their congregation on the Discipleship Journey—especially with so many of them being new to church? It will be amazing to watch! I praise the Lord that our church has the honor of being just a small part of what God is doing there.

Thursday was District Conference. It was enjoyable to fellowship with the different pastors serving in our churches, and to hear the many positive reports from all over our district of what God is doing in our various churches.

We had family visiting from out of town, so on our day off Marcia and I took my sister to Wilmington Beach. We had a great time, but realized that next time we go to a place like that we need to go with someone who knows the area or has been there before, because we didn’t really know where to go or what to do. Even so, we had a lot of laughs and enjoyed the drive.

Maranatha! Keep your eyes to the sky. Our Redemption draws near!

Grace & Peace,
Pastor Rick

Wesleyan Welcomes New Head of School

The Board of Directors welcomes Dr. Rob Brown to the Head of School position at Wesleyan Education Center effective July 6, 2009.Dr. Brown's selection culminates a nationwide search that took place over the past twelve months. While the Search Committee researched and evaluated people, we knew that the Lord would reveal in His time His person to lead Wesleyan Education Center forward.Dr. Brown received his BS from Tennessee Temple University, graduating with a double major in Biblical Studies and Physical Education. He went on to receive his Master's degree in Sports Management and later earned another Master's degree in Religious Education. In addition, he has earned his Doctorate in Ministry, majoring in Leadership Development. Beginning his career as Director of Athletics, coach and PE teacher, Dr. Brown has held a variety of positions in his twenty years of commitment to the Christian School ministry, most recently as Headmaster of the Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear, Delaware. He has demonstrated exceptional administrative and leadership skills and brings a clear purpose that is consistent with our School....a shared vision to build God's kingdom by striving to keep Wesleyan as a premier Christian school. Sharing Dr. Brown's enthusiasm are his wife Jackie, his daughter Sophia, eleven, and his son Seth, five. The entire family, excited about how the Lord brought them to WEC, is anxious to develop new friends as they move south to their new home in North Carolina. They appreciate your prayers as they complete their ministry at Red Lion, sell their home in Delaware, and move to High Point. The Board thanks you for your commitment to Christian education at Wesleyan Education Center. We know that we can count on the Wesleyan family to lend support and encouragement to Dr. Brown as he assumes his new position.

The First Point-July 13, 2009

Last Sunday (July 5th) I taught in Sunday School. I’m guest teaching for three weeks in our Starting PointClass, an 8 week introductory class that exposes people to our vision, mission and basic doctrinal beliefs. So far the class has gone well. There have been many questions and I have enjoyed the exchange. To makeit more convenient for others in other Sunday School classes, our next round of Starting Point classes willbe at a different time during the week, that way teachers and other ministry workers can be involved aswell. The starting point class is part of our requirements for those wishing to take the discipleship journey. We plan to hold the class three times a year. The next one will be sometime in the fall. This week, on Thursday, is our District Conference. Many of the ministry workers will be out of the officethat day to attend the meetings. Sunday night begins our adult camp meeting. Details for location and timesare on our webpage, or in the bulletin. Dr. Anthony Graham is our special speaker this year. If you havenever heard Dr. Graham speak before, you are in for a special treat. He is a dynamic communicator, whopulls no punches, but delivers the truth with clarity and power. You are sure to be impacted in a powerfulway and will not want to miss a single service. Every time I have heard Dr. Graham speak, I have beeninspired and challenged. I hope you’ll make it a point to attend the meetings. My sister, Julie has flown in from Arizona to visit with our family this week. It’s great to see her again. One of the many nice things about living in the Piedmont, is that access for travel is very convenient. As aresult, we have had a lot of family and friends visit us by plane and car. It is wonderful. Just one more on along list of reasons I love living in the south! The new pastor in Presque Isle, Rev. Bud Fancy, began his ministry there this last weekend. I am so happyfor PIWC, as they have a first rate pastor who loves people and will very quickly be entrenched in the lifeof that community. Bud is a great friend and it gives me joy to see him pasturing in a church that means theworld to me. I pray for him and PIWC that they will grow in depth and breadth to levels that they havenever dreamed possible. God bless you, Bud!I hope you all are having a wonderful summer.Maranatha! Keep your eyes to the sky. Our Redemption draws near!

Grace & Peace
